Spring Cleaning Tips

March 19, 2018

Spring is around the corner, do you know what that means? It’s time to get your hands a little dirty and do some good old spring cleaning. It may be the last thing you want to do to ring in the new season, but there will be a weight lifted off of your shoulders once it is all done. So, whether you are an avid pro at this or are just about to enter your first official go-around at spring cleaning, we’ve got a few tips for you to knock this out of the park and enjoy a fresh and clean start to the season.

The Closet

If you haven’t cleaned out your closet in a while, this is your perfect opportunity to start the season off fresh with an organized and mess-free closet. We encourage you to go through your closet and pick out the clothes, shoes and accessories that you never wear anymore. Think to yourself, “Do I really need this?” Chances are that if you haven’t worn them in the past year, you won’t miss them. Put them in a pile to donate to a local thrift store. Then, try to organize what is left in the closet. We love color coding our clothes in sections; tops, sweaters, pants, and dresses. Once you see that cleaned out and organized closet you will automatically feel at ease and it will be that much easier to get ready in the morning.

Computer

The cleaning doesn’t stop with just your house, your electronics need a little clean up too. Take some time to clear out any old files that you no longer need and that desktop that probably has files piling up. You should even transfer photos stored into your computer or phone into an external hard drive because you never know when they might crash.

Bedding

While your sheets and pillowcases may get a cleaning every couple of weeks, chances are your bedspread and pillows aren’t washed quite as often. These should be washed at least a few times a year. Make sure to check the label before you toss them into the washer to ensure you don’t ruin them!

Mattress

Your bed cleaning shouldn’t stop at the sheets, your mattress deserves a little love and cleaning too! When you take off those sheets to wash, take the opportunity of an uncovered bed to clean the mattress by vacuuming it to get off any dust, crumbs, or whatever may end up there. Use those tools on the vacuum to clean out any crevices the mattress may have and finish it off with a little all-natural disinfectant spray.

Windows

When regularly cleaning your house, the windows probably don’t get much love, especially from the outside. Throughout the months, the exteriors of your windows collect dirt and grime from the weather and dust that flies through the air. Show your windows a little love by cleaning the inside and outside of each window in your home. A little soap and water will do the trick. You may be surprised at how much more clearly you can see through those windows once they’ve been cleaned from the outside.

Couches

Your couches may not get cleaned very often, so this is your opportunity to make them look clean, comfortable, and smell fresh again. If you have pets, you know first-handed that those cushions can collect a lot of dirt and pet hair! Take off those cushions and vacuum the base of the couch to capture any dirt, dust, crumbs, or hair that may have gotten on there. Then, vacuum the cushions individually with those handy tools your vacuum may come with. And if your cushions have slips to take off and wash, throw them in the washer! (Just make sure to read the label first so that you don’t ruin them.)

Vents & Filters

Those heater and air conditioning vents and filters collect a ton of dust, pet dander and fur over time, so it is important to give those a good cleaning. Use a damp cloth to wipe down all of the vents in your house and be sure to replace those filters. Forgetting to do so is bad for your health and can even ruin your air conditioner by it getting blocked up.

Fridge

Give your refrigerator a good cleaning by taking out all the food, shelves, and drawers. Look through the food that has been sitting in your fridge and trash anything that has gone bad. Then, give each drawer and shelf a good scrubbing to get rid of all those crumbs and spills. Lastly, organize your fridge as you’d like so that everything you need frequently is in reach!

Oven

There’s no denying that the oven gets pretty dirty after it’s been used for a while. Grease, crumbs, spills and burnt food droppings make it look like a murder scene. This is your chance to make it look like new again. Soak those racks and wipe away that mess with a little elbow grease. A little baking soda and white vinegar will do the trick!

Outdoor Furniture

If you’re ready to hangout outside, it’s time to give that outdoor furniture a little attention. Hose down those tables and chairs with a little dishwashing soap to get them looking new and inviting. Pretty soon you’ll be having guests over to hangout outside and sip on some homemade lemonade.
